Salou, Spain is a city that was founded by the Greeks in the 6th Century before Christ. Since then the city has evolved into a tourist spot for Europeans, with lots of British, German, French, Italian, and of course, Spanish tourists. The history of Salou: From Salou's origins around the 6th Century, it has grown to be a international commerce city. Its natural conditions and location in a small, protected peninsula make it a favorable place to dock. First writings mentioning Salou as a commerce port date back to the 4th century.
During the Roman period, Salou was called Salauris, and was considered to be one of the most important ports of the area. In the Muslim period, there weren't important advances made in the city, but with the arrival of the Christians after the reconquest, in the 8th century the city began to grow and become a reference point in the area, especially due to its advantageous port location. In the 19th Century, Salou saw moments of riches and splendor, and wasn't a stranger to pirate attacks. Proof of this lies in the Torre Vella de Salou, ordered built by Pere de Cardona to defend the city against pirate attacks.
In the 17th century, the city was annexed from Vila Seca by order of the archbishop. In the 19th century, the construction and inauguration of the Faro de Salou Lighthouse took place. The 19th and 20th centuries saw Salou losing importance in its commercial port, but gaining importance as a tourist destination because of its beaches. Before, where there were large transport merchandise boats, today you see yachts for charter docked there for holiday trips.
Many chalets, houses, and holiday apartments were built in the 20th century, mostly around the 1960's where Salou saw its boom of hotels and other holiday accommodations. During the 1970's, Salou began to segregate from Vila Seca, and in 1989, became its own municipality.
During the last years of the 90's, Port Aventura was built. |
